Academic Style

Well organized and logical writing does not come easily and no one can learn writing like that overnight. Clearly one has to do it systematically, constantly practicing in improving your skills. Although talent is an important thing in writing convincing and flawless works it is essential to never underestimate the power learning.

Writing is a complex process therefore it is important that you pay attention in a composition class in order to be a good writer in college. Once you get to college you understand that writing assignments differ greatly from those in high school. They are more complex and require a lot of research and effort to create a solid essay. Such type of writing is usually referred to as academic writing. There are a couple of features typically present in an academic piece of work:

   1) Scientific approach to the subject matter based on a scrupulous research

   2) Your topic should be of a practical use and interest to your intended reader. Do not simply provide your point of view but rather provide new information and facts based on your findings

   3) Have a solid case of logical reasoning so that reader sees your point and is convinced by the facts taken from valid sources.

It is necessary to remember that academic or scientific writing should be presented in a certain form and written in an appropriate language. Often times it is not easy to determine what style you have to use writing about different subjects. Students frequently submit papers full of lengthy sentences and badly structured paragraphs. Such style gives an impression that the writer is not totally aware of the topic himself consequently the reader is not convinced by or even interested in such paper. What you need to create is a solid, logically built and simply worded paper that will reach a goal of catching reader’s attention by your intriguing topic. Try to avoid complicated technical terms known only to a small group of people and use well known but effective words.

You may want to follow these tips to make your essay correspond to the initial task:

  • State your thesis clearly

  • Make statements based on facts

  • Write in a persuasive manner

  • Use passive voice

  • Check your facts in a number of source in order to avoid technical mistakes
