Why so many book reviews just look and read like a synopsis from ‘Cliff notes’? The answer is simple- most people who attempt to write a book review simply do not know what it entails. Unfortunately for many, it is not a mere listing of main characters and who did what throughout the book, critical analysis and deep scrutiny of characters, their deeds and dialogues is what makes a great book review.   

Any book review needs to have a thesis, a theme to which the entire paper will be dedicated and analyzed through a prism of characters and events described in the book. Thinking ‘outside the box’ in terms of what the book is about but also basing your ideas on real facts about author’s life and history of the book will most likely get the readers’ attention and maintain it till the last word.

Follow the essentially important matters while writing your book report:

1. State where the author is coming from, his school of thought. Every writer has a frame of reference from which he/she derives the ideas and when putting them in the book agrees or disagrees with the generally known ideas. Are the author’s ideas and thoughts original or a repetition of something familiar, what impact do those ideas make on known theory?
2. What is the logic behind the book in review? The ideas expressed by the author in the beginning of the book should raise some issues whether it be political, social, or educational. What are ideas based on? Theories and assumption must be discussed and how those theories are supported or otherwise opposed by the author.
3. Style of writing should be in line with the theme and mood of the book, otherwise it will send mixed messages to the readers. Discussion of the writing style needs to be included in any decent book review.
4. Personal attitude is the concluding most important part of a book review. Regardless of how good or bad the book itself is in a review you as a writer still need to make a judgment whether you liked it or not. It must be justified though by all those things discussed above as conclusion needs to be a logical step from three points accessed first. Remember that your thoughts need to be original about the book and not a short copy of it.
