Intended Reader

In a dialogue with any given person you will have to think about your responses in terms of that person’s frame of reference. The same approach is used in composing any essay or research paper. Before writing anything on the chosen subject you should decide what style and language you will use and what kind on paper your audience (readers) is expecting.

In case you decided to write a paper specifically for your college professor you need to take into consideration a number of details. Your essay format should be exactly corresponding to the one required in the task. Language should be as professional as possible with no slang or improper grammar. Although you should use a lot of outside sources you cannot forget to use them only in order to prove your point of view and focus on making it as personal as you can without sounding ignorant.

If you want to impress the reader with your deep thoughts and creativity of a certain subject, you can use a few ostentatious phrases just to make your essay sound interesting. Avoid using those too much! For example you are writing a critical work on a book or a play, placing a couple of interesting expressions will enrich it however plain facts and statistics will make it truly trustworthy. Take care of your evidence and logical structure as any type of audience is looking for a well built paper with a logical organization. Note that a younger audience will appreciate strong and colorful words while a strictly professional one will look into factual, evidential and reasoning aspects of your work.

Also note that depending on the characteristics of your intended audience you need to regulate the length of your paper. In case it is clearly stated in the project requirements you need to keep to those regardless of whether you want to write that much or not. In general it is better to use common sense and your professor’s instructions when writing for different audiences. Although it might seem a difficult task at first it will become easier with practice!
