Methods of the Outline

There are a number of methods to write a helpful outline for your essay. These are the most widely used and easy to remember outline techniques: Mind-mapping, traditional, and the box.

The mind-mapping format of the outline is regarded to be the most adaptable. It can be easily changed any time you want without having to redo the whole thing all over again. You can just add or leave out some points you think about as you create your essay. Creating a mind-map outline is easy: you need to draw a circle placing your main idea in the center of it. The branches that are going to be placed on its sides are going to represent subtopics, which however you need to classify according to their significance for the paper.

Traditional format is the most common way of sorting your ideas and it represented by enumerated list of points. There are a couple of major divisions each of which have a few subdivisions aimed at their specification.

The box method is not a very popular one however it is a very convenient way of organizing your writing. It helps to visually see how your topic will be divided into several segments. Each box holds one or more related ideas that are supporting every section. It is not very detailed therefore if your subject matter requires more specifications you should choose another outline method.

For instance if your topic is “Advantages and Disadvantages of different forms of Government”, your box will most likely look like this:

Forms of Government

Description of each form of Power

Effect on Country’s Economy

Democratic
Socialist
Communist

Description of each form of rule, its characteristics

Describing pros and cons of every form of government
