Proofreading

Proofreading is not a mere act of making sure there are no visible grammar or spelling mistakes. Your essay should be an easy readable logically connected sequence of sentences. Being an objective and judging reader is a key to successfully proofread your own writing.

You have to evaluate your essay on a number of points, some of them are:

   1) Sentences are correctly worded and logically complete.

   2) Grammar is used correctly in accordance with rules

   3) There are no repetitive words or phrases in every other sentence

   4) No technical/spelling errors

   5) Style of the essay corresponds to the initial requirements of the class

   6) Thesis statement is intact with the whole body and conclusion of the paper

This list is just a short example of mistakes that any writer is likely to make. It is obvious that a more experienced writer will make fewer mistakes than a college freshman however each paper requires a careful proofreading regardless of the writer’s expertise.

Every writer knows his/her weaknesses thus it is easier to look for specific mistakes. If you know that your grammar is not your strongest point you should check your sentence structure and see whether you used correct tenses. Reading through your paper at least 5 times will minimize amount of technical mistakes and indicate logical pitfalls (in case there are any).

Although it is not absolutely necessary it is better to entrust proofreading to someone you consider a better expert than you. This will be a more objective and accurate form of proofreading, causing more constructive changes to make your essay better. A person reading your paper should be a good writer as well because only someone who knows how to write can make spot a mistake and provide an opinion on how to eliminate it.

The most important thing while proofreading your text is to be open to criticism and not being afraid to appear knowledgeable. Accept valid advices and comment as tools for your further improvement in the art of writing.
